What are the different types of sump pumps?

July 28, 2016

For industries, businesses and homeowners in areas prone to flooding, the sump pump is an incredibly useful piece of technology. Having a sump pump is essential to removing standing water in any area below the water table that must remain dry.

There are two types of sump pumps in common use today: the submersible and the pedestal varieties. Each one has its advantages and disadvantages; read on to discover which is suitable for your situation.

Submersible Sump Pumps

The submersible sump pump is widely used for both industrial and home applications. The entire device is contained within compact housing shaped like a box. It sets within the area to be pumped (otherwise known as the sump); it is waterproofed to prevent water damage to the motor or electronic components.

Due to the pump’s shape and positioning, it’s more difficult to service. However, it makes quick work of standing water, pumps quickly and efficiently, and easily handles debris.

Pedestal Sump Pumps

The pedestal sump pump is more affordable and it’s less common than the submersible variety. Its motor sets above the water or sump area, on top of a long, extensible shaft. As a result, it is easier to repair. It also lasts longer with a lifespan of up to three decades, twice that of a submersible sump pump.

This kind of pump is ideal for shallower sumps. The pedestal sump pump is often not powerful enough to pump out large amounts of water like you receive during a storm. It may not work fast enough to prevent flooding of your basement during a heavy storm. It’s also noisier as the sound of its motor is not dampened by surrounding water like the submersible pump.
